"Understanding the Impact: NEA's Efforts to Reverse Tier Two Retirement Restrictions"

Updated: Apr 10, 2024

What you need to know about Tier 2 and your retirement under SURS

If you were hired after Jan. 1, 2011, you are enrolled in Tier 2 and will have to work until age 67 to retire with full benefits. Your peers hired prior to this date only have to work until age 55, if they have 35 years of service. This affects not only K12 teachers enrolled in TRS, but also higher education employees in SURS.

IEA is fighting to change this and has filed legislation, (SB 2024) to do so. Learn more at UndoTierTwo.org. Check out this TikTok video from an IEA member – and another for further explanation.

IEA is part of the We Are One Illinois labor coalition, working together to create a more equitable retirement for ALL higher education employees. Please take action and tell lawmakers to Undo Tier Two. Click here to call or email your lawmakers.
